CV joint grease
Why is grease being squeezed out of the boot behind the clamp. I have to go on a 1k trip at the end of the week. Any way to put new grease back in. Thinking of installing a grease zerk and pumping full of grease. Any thoughts?
I was going to drill between the humps in the bearing case and tap a zerk in there. Also considered drilling a small hole and filling with grease needle and then spot weld the hole with my mig. I wouldn't think a quick spot weld would create enough heat to cause a problem. I am a little under the gun to solving this issue before my trip.
It's been a minute since I've had one apart, but if I remember correctly that's still very thick metal in the spot you're planning to drill. It would probably be pretty easy to accidentally drill thru too far and puncture the rubber, and you would get some metal shavings in the mix if not.
On top of that, you're still going to throw grease back out the area it's already leaking from.
IMO it would be far less time consuming, less intrusive, and it would actually fix the grease loss problem if you just get rid of the old clamp, slide the boot forward a couple inches, pack it with grease, and install a new clamp.
Just my .02

Well.......that was fun. Took about 15 seconds to figure out I wasn't going to be drilling and tapping in a zerk.......that's some hard stuff. As soon as I cut the clamp the boot popped off, most likely because I had it on a 2 post lift with the suspension hanging free. Jacked up the lower control arm and put a tube of grease in and replaced the clamp. I didn't buy the correct clamp and just used a 4 inch hose clamp (don't have a clamp tool). Hopefully this will get me thru my trip. I am going to take my new CV joint and extra grease and clamp with me just in case. Wish me luck.
I've been running with a hose clamp on mine for about a year or so I think with no problems. I did noticed that it mattered which direction I oriented the screw. I had to reverse my initial installation so that when I tightened it, it would torque inward and not slip off the boot.
