Engine oil lines

Hi,
I recently replaced my engine oil filter lines. The job was a bit messy, but not a big problem. To remove the end from the engine, I had to lift the engine a little bit. But no need to remove the engine mounts.
On the cooler side, where are two round plastic covers. These cracked at the installation. Not completly, only one sharp crack. It is still round. Hope you understand what I mean.
For what is this black cover? Is it only a dust cover or is his job to prevent the blue retaining clip from falling out?
If its to prevent the clip from falling out, I think my cover is now not solid enough. But if its only a dust cover, it should be fine.
I tend to think its a dust cover, since some older lines don't have them. (see last picture) But I'm not sure... Do you have any idea?
Regards,
Dominik
