Default Engines turns over wont crank, intemittent

2001 4.3 Xtreme
103,xxx Miles

99.99% of the time I never have this problem or any problem, no codes, no stalls, no anything. This is only the second time this has happened.

After sitting over night I will crank the truck, it will turn over once or twice like usual, seems like it fires up like usual but then stalls right out. It never idles then stalls, just right after fire, the engine stops.

Details that I think may be important.

**First incident**

1. The first time this happened I tried to crank it 3 or 4 more times, same symptom. I sat there for a minute or two, tried to crank it one more time and it fired right up, idled a little rough for a couple seconds then it ran smooth.

2. I took it to the dealer the same day and was told the only code that was thrown was the fuel sensor, or something like that, but that only causes my gas gauge to act up and would have nothing to do with the symptoms described above. He also said the truck could be losing fuel pressure over night so I left it with him to test the theory, pressure turned out fine and he had no idea what the cause of the problem was.

**Second incident, 1 month later**

I had no problems, between incidents.

1. Same symptoms, engine turns over great, seems to catch like usual right as its firing up but then no start.

2. Tried the same thing as last time, waiting a couple minutes before trying again, nothing.

3. I tried cranking it so many times I eventually killed the battery, swore a few times, then got a ride to work.

4. When I got home that night I tried cranking it again, got two good attempts with the exact same results before battery was to weak to turn the engine over.

5. Rolled the truck out of the garage, hooked it up to jumper cables, gave it about a minute before trying again and it started right up like nothing was ever wrong. No rough idle no anything.

Truck is running great today, you would never know it had an issue.

Any ideas?

What were your specific fuel pressure readings (both with the pump running & the leak down after the pump shuts off)? This sounds like a fuel supply problem. These engines have a very specific fuel pressure requirements due to the pressure actuated poppet nozzles used in them. Your '01 may have an MFI spider in it though which isn't as tight in terms of fuel pressure requirements, but is still up there for proper engine operation.
