Default RE: fuel gauge

Well, my fuel gauge is messed up, but it's just because it's messed up, not because it's the sending unit. I'd make sure before you invest all that money for nothing.

Default RE: fuel gauge

I have a 98 blazer. And im having kinda the same problem with my fuel gauge...BUT.. my fuel gage works fine up untill you get to half of a tank.. then it stops and does not go past that. So after half a tank, i have to guess on how much gas i really have... Ive seen on all these Forums that peoples gauges just go nuts or just dont work.. but mine does..(up untill half a tank) But i havent seen anyone with my problem.. is it my Fuel Meter..sending unit or the needle its self? i havent check grounding wire yet but just seeing if im missing something?

My fuel gauge on my '91 is goofy, too, but it just takes setting the trip odometer every time I refuel and then paying attention to the gauge's behavior to get more of a feeling for its idosyncracies in case some time I forget to reset the trip odometer. Luckily, on mine, it acts goofiest during the first half of the tankful, and toward the end, it stays pretty much the same, toward the low end of the dial. It does register as low even though I've only used 13 or 14 gallons, when my manual tells me there are 20 gallons in the tank. But I figure that is good, since it makes me go ahead and fill up before I start putting a lot of stress on the fuel pump with an almost-empty tank. I would not think about replacing the sending unit unless I had to replace the fuel pump and already had the gas tank out.

You might do a search on this in the forum, as it has been discussed before, and seems to be a common problem.

Sounds like the float is stuck...not really easy to check, you have to drop the tank, remove the slide lock for the pump housing on the tank, remove the whole unit, and check for proper movement, or...deal with it

Or replace the sending unit. Most cases where the fuel gauge is acting goofy is related to a fualty gas gauge sending unit. The cure, replce it. Since you have the gas tank out, replace the fuel pump, the screen, and the rubber gasket on top. Also clean the tank out, and make sure the rust isn't too bad. Clean the rust off too. IF you have holes, JB Weld works good to patch them.
