So after pulling the 5k pound trailer my power steering takes more effort to turn or feels stiffer, my power steering fluid is a little low but I don't think that would be the problem. I searched through the threads and only found this problem in a K5. Someone suggested the power steering pump not producing enough pressure so that is my first guess as well.
Any thoughts or things to check befor I replace stuff would help lots!

Do you have any power assist at all?
These pumps have a habit of shearing the shaft off. The belt actually holds the pulley and shaft in place. Remove the belt, and grab the pulley and try to pull it out of the pump. You might get the surprise of your life!

 

i still have power assist but it just feels stiff and harder to turn. when im parked i turned my wheels back and fourth it sounded like the power steering was making a little more noise than normal ,no squeeling or anything tho. and about the shaft, im assuming that would make somewhat of a loud noise when it happened and i never heard any metal breaking sound. but i'll still check that out. and ill also try raising the rpm's up a little when parked and see if that makes it easier to turn the wheels. i would think that will tell me if its a pump power issue.

Edit: i drove my friends blazer and it was quite a bit easier to steer so i know its not just me immagining this problem.

 

If the fluid is low... fill it back up. Juss sayin' lol

 

Lol yeah I should probably do that but it's inbetween the add and full line so I wasn't too worried, maybe the system is sensitive? I'll top it off and check it out.

 

Since you do have at least some assist then the shaft didnt shear. When mine sheared there was no noise. It wasnt a violent event, it just basically twisted.

 

so i topped off the fluid and in doing so i over filled it by just a little. but that didn't help the problem at all so i don't really know what to look for next :/ i mean its not horrible its something i can live with f i have to just king of annoying. oh and about the over filling can that cause any problems down the road or does it really matter?
