It is the cable or actually it is the part of the cable assembly at the transmission, it strips out over time with the result of not putting the trans into the correct gear selection.
I had to replace this on my '95 several years ago. Not alot of fun as the driver's seat must come out to be able to fold the carpet back for access. There is also a sealant used by Chevy where the cable passes through the floor....nice and sticky, rather messy. Will need to find some type of sealant for the new cable.
Will also need to remove some dash panels and spend some quality time under the steering wheel.....fun times ahead. Of course "the kid" will be with you helping, right?
Good luck.

No unfortunately he is in Florida at college. I had to drive down and give him my Jeep until the end of the semester, then drove his back to work on it. He was driving back to school when the Blazer started this, and he was stuck at a gas station 4 hours away from home.
He still had 4 hours left to drive. He made it, but could not get the car into park, so he pulled his tire down to chock the wheels until I got there (Emergency Brake is a mess also)

I dunno if you will be able to see the pics anymore since I refuse to give photobukit any money but hopefully this may help you get the job done.
