Default odds and ends

hey i have inspection this month, my truck seemed to be doing well so i haven't had to post, i do have two small questions though.
i have never had emergency brakes on my '98, i know that they are shoes, is it possible to adjust these or can i pass without them? (replacing them is last)the second question was about 2-3 weeks ago i was driving to upstate new york, and my airbag light turned on for no reason, after easing my grip on the wheel prepared for my airbag to go off, it shut off. now the light will go on and off momentarily, i tried to put a codereader, but left empty handed, any suggestions? Thanks

dont worry about the air bag deploying....the light means the system has faulted, and will not deploy (even in an accident). And a regular code reader cant get an SRS code...gotta have one of the fancy GM Tech 2 scanners ($4000 used...)
