Default Oil change question

I am sure this has been discussed a bunch here, but I was just hoping to get a quick answer to an oil question. We have a 95 blazer with a little over 200,000 miles. I had a vague recollection that our last mechanic told me that he used 20w50 because of the age of the car. I just changed the oil and filter myself and used that same weight oil. After it was done, I started to worry that I should have used a lighter weight. Any knowledgeable opinions on this? Thanks in advance.

If you live in Texas where the temps hit 100 a lot you need a thicker oil. I use 40w. Never seen 50w though if I had 200k miles I might consider it.

My '91 calls for 5W30 and IIRC, allowed for 10W30 if the truck was high mileage.

So here is the big question. Should I just do another oil change before even driving the car? I live in Northern California, so it gets a little hot during the summer, bit since the air conditioner does not work in the Blazer, it wouldn’t be driven on hot days.

That, I do not know. You hate to change good oil at today's prices.

If it were me I'd replace two quarts of it with 10-30. That way I would feel confident that the tightest spaces, like main bearings, were getting enough oil. It might not make any difference to the engine but I need one less thing to worry about driving this car.

Thank you all for the feedback. I am going to drain the oil and put in some thinner stuff. I think the final reply from puttster put it right. “I need one less thing to worry about driving this car.” Maybe I will save the 20/50 oil for our 76 VW bus.
