Default temporary roof rack

I want to haul an octagonal poker table that is just too wide to fit inside. Looking for advice on how to rig something up to safely carry it on the roof. I'm guessing a mover's blanket and ropes but how to fasten them or alternative methods would be appreciated. If it also worked for future loads, like plywood, that would be good.

I would use "endless" ratchet straps (the kind that make a big loop instead of having hooks) and go through the windows. Much more secure than ropes and, as long as you put the ratchet where you can reach it, you'll still be able to get out of the car when you arrive at your destination.

Also go to harbor freight and get several moving blankets to protect the roof and paint

Endless ratchet looks like the ticket. It could go through those little push-out windows. To keep the table from sliding back what about a rope tied around the strap and run into the back cargo area and then close the window, pinching it tight.
