Top brake light, 97 Blazer

My top brake light is broken and I was wondering how to get to the connector that is underneath the roof. Looks like it's about a foot back and I can't pull it out far enough to get my fingers on the connector so I can unplug it. I've got the new light but just can't get to the connector on the old one. Does the ceiling have to come out from inside?
I also wanted to mention that I was posting here a while back about the brake lights and directionals on this vehicle (97). The car is in Puerto Rico, so I'm not able to just run out back and work on it. On my last trip there I brought along a new multifunction switch and installed it and now everything works. Thanks for all the help you guys provided.

You will have to drop the plastic panel at the back of the ceiling. This should give you access to the plug. I believe that the panel is held on with spring clips only, but look for any screws before pulling away at it.
