Default Turn Signal Assembly

Looking for some advice concerning replacing my turn signal assembly. From what I have read in my manual, I will have to remove the steering wheel and steering column covers to replace the assembly. I also read online that I will have to disengage the driver's side and passenger side's airbags, which is something I would like to stay away from. You would think that being a son of an airline mechanic would rub off on me, but it really hasn't. From what I have read, it would seem as if this job would be best left to a professional, but I really do not want to have to dish out a large amount of cash to get this fixed. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Should I take this to a mechanic to fix or is there an easier way to replace the assembly than I have described above?

Thanks
Rob
