Default Welding new catalytic converter question

I'm pretty sure my catalytic converter is bad, it rattles at an idle and around 50-55mph I get some hesitation, but I'm going to bring it to a muffler shop that will check it for free. If it is bad I will replace it myself, I would like to save about $100 and get a universal converter and weld it in. I'm a bit new to welding so my question is, I have a 90amp wire feed mig welder with I believe .030" wire, will my welder be sufficient to weld it?

If not, how good does clamping the catalytic converter on work? and how would it be clamped on, if the converter in/out is the same size as the existing pipe do I get a sleeve that clamps both on the existing pipe and then on the converter?

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Todd

fyi my blazer is a '96 4.3 4x4 4 door if it makes any difference

You should be able to weld that together with your welder without any problem. If you do choose to weld it be careful that you do not burn through the pipe - exhaust pipe is not really that thick and if you have your heat turned up too high you will burn through easily.

You can clamp it in place. I the converter I/O and you exhaust pipes are the same size as you stated, you can purchase a "band clamp" to clamp it together - band clamps will cost you more than a "sleeve" and two regular clamps but I think it would work out better for you.

Just my .02.
