What is the thing that looks like a resonator before the converter and can it be removed without causing problems?

Does this picture posted by G0LFADD1CT help?

Pre-cat. Removing it without consequences, not likely. What makes you ask?

The emissions requirements of the newer trucks dictated the need for a pre-cat. If you live somewhere that does actual tail-pipe emissions testing, you likely will not pass without it. If you live in a visual and/or plug-in inspection locale, then you would probably be ok without it provided you still had the main catalytic converter.

The stock pre-cat looks a bit different, but just putting this here for illustration purposes.

The pre cat is what I was looking for. It has exhaust leaks at both ends and the only way I can find to repair it is to purchase the entire system from engine to muffler for somewhere around $300.00 which I cannot afford. On to plan 2, try to weld it I guess. Thanks for the answers.
