I think 3/4" MDF is the most recommended. I used 5/8" Particle Board because I was a n00b and it has held up just fine. Mine is sealed...

 

ok im thinking about changing my plan a bit. This is my current plan
a sub on each side and the amp mounter along the back seats under plexi. Last night i thought about putting in a tv. It would go in the area between the subs. A 19" would fit perfectly. It would fold up out of the floor. I would have a/v connections for a xbox or what ever and i would have a dvd player. The worst part is all the money involved in this. Since i only make 250 a week and will be going to college in the fall so i will be making aroun 150 a week. So it would take a long time to complete. Tell me what you guys think. Is it a good idea or is it just one of those stupid ideas you think of late at night. I would also have to be able to remove the tv for when i want to go hit the trails.

download WINISD or Bassboxpro and punch in your subs T/S parameters. The program will determine which enclosure is best for your sub. Not all subs are made to be in a sealed or ported enclosure. Some subs are one or the other.


As far as making a U shape with MDF, you want to use a method called kerfing. Do a google search. I know the home depot website has a great tutorial on kerfing.

 

its not a stupid idea. just dont get to extravageant in the design to were it will be to difficult to complete. keep it simple. especially if its yout first install. it looks easy on paper.
the design u cam up with looks good and will work awsome with the sealed boxes. plexi is expensive so beware. 3/4 mdf is the best to use unless your reallly good with fiberglass.and bondo/painting.

 

yea i have never glassed before so i decided that this shouldnt be a good thing to start with. I am also good with woodworking and have access to all the tools i need so it shouldnt be a problem to build it, but it will take alot of time and money. I will probably end up saving money this summer and make it a winter project which means the blazer will have to park outside.

I just wanted to add too that with sealed boxes you generally have to push more power into the subs in order to overcome the vacuum that's created inside the box, that is, if you wanna get the best bass/sound out of 'em, vented boxes are a better bet, don't go ported there's too much chance for error and you can get turbulence @ the port.

 

Kerf cuts are easy but time consuming and you want to be very very gentle with the piece you just did when moving it from the saw to the work space.
