Ported or not?

Ported or not?
I've got an 88 Jimmy, and I'm about to put a system in it. I was wondering if it's better to go with a ported box, or just go with the typical sub box that I have. Any help is appreciated.

Depends on what sound you're lookin for. Sealed boxes tend to give you tighter more punchy bass. Great for rock, or country style music. Ported gives you louder lows but you loose accuracy. You also loose some of the higher end bass with these. Ported is better suited for hip-hop, or rap. I myself prefer ported because i like the lows.

ported
I agree with him I like ported better. I have a 4 cubic foot ported box and it moves some air at 1200rms with the 15" sub I have in it. Really it all just depends on what sound you want like he said above me. People will tell you how sealed is better and how ported is better. If you want more quality just go with sealed. But if your looking for record sounding lows and moving air go with a ported. It also depends on how loud is the sub going to be, usually if its over 400watts rms a ported will sound fine, anything under I would just do a sealed box. How many rms watts will you be powering your sub with from the amp?

Thanks for the info. It was pretty useful. I listen to both hip-hop and metal, so I'll probably use the box I have. As for the amp, I'm not sure what I'll be getting.

Cool, good luck getting it set up. Try checking out power acoustik amps on ebay. I used them for years and had no problem's with them and they supplied plenty of quality power for a cheaper price. They really made my subs slam, look into the class d amps they offer. As long as it's class D you can't go wrong with them.

Right on. I'll check those out. I don't really need anything to big. I'll be pushing 2 JL 12w0.

If you go with a ported box u will get a louder system but it wont have that crisp punch like a sealed box does....put if u go ported u have to tune ur box to the right frequency sumwhere between 30 and 35 hertz...that will give u low bass tones an sum punch..

Sealed - crisp, tight bass. If space is an issue a sealed box is typically smaller. Ported louder, but sloppy at times. Great for low end bass. larger enclosure.

Thanks for all the info. Most of the forums I go on are full of children. It's nice to get positive responses. I'll be going with a sealed box, since I already have one. That and I like the clean bass more than anything.
