I dont know why it rusted here but I welded in a stainless patch.
The stud welder from harbor freight works great for 100. Not only to pull dents but what I like is I can finally have something to hold onto when trying to add the first tack weld.
License plates are some what fire retardant so old license plate makes a good heat shield.
I got this sheet of stainless steel about 25years ago for next to nothing at an auction went cheap cause it had some dents etc.., makes awesome patches and other structural pieces. stainless spoils me when welding,, so clean and pure it welds nice.
Looking Good! The reason why your tailgate rusted out there is because is because that is where the rear wiper arm support is. Im assuming it has a gasket behind it that probably gets old and cracks and lets moisture collect behind it, eventually starting to rust. Your patch looks good. That paint system you got looks interesting too. Cant wait to see the finished product. Keep the pics coming!👍👍👍
You just blew my mind when you mentioned using the pin welder to make a handle for lining up patches....it's brilliant! I do a lot of rust repair at work and that is going to come in clutch.
My blazer and one of my old ones both rusted In that same spot. It is a strange looking area for it to rust, but 95teal is probably on the right track as to why.

glad you caught that, I love it, makes welding in patches not so bad, man I dont know how many times I have dropped my repair piece down inside the panel SOB! lol If you or anyone else buys the HF one their little attachment for the dent puller is garbage. I just took a pair of vice grips and welded a nut on it then used the vice grips to clamp on the stud.
I just did a video on removing the trim for the roof rack. For some dumb reason, I was thinking they were fastened on with hardware but no just two-sided tape.
