FINALLY getting back to this project....

So if I pinch the fuel line at the fuel filter, couldn't it still leak down through the return line? I would be pinching the line between the pump and the pressure gauge, right? I'm thinking if the pressure holds it would mean the backside was OK. What am I missing here, sorry....

Any chance that the hard starting could be a camshaft or crankshaft sensor? Would either of those being faulty give me a check engine light? Seems strange that it starts only if cranked in short bursts.

Camshaft sensor not used to get your engine to start.

The plastic timing chain cover on these warp over time from the heat. GM sells a shim kit to space out the crankshaft sensor if your crankshaft is physically hitting the sensor.

Pull the crankshaft sensor and look for signs that it is physically being hit by the crank. If so, get GM's shim kit.

Excessive cranking times sets the 1351 code and the computer stops the injectors from opening. Your short burts only, to get it to start...I bet if you read the code you'll find it setting 1351 when cranking for a bit. These things are frekin picky as heck over what brand parts you use for the ignition system.

Some people have said the "grey" distributor cap is trash, only the black one works ok. Stick with AC Delco parts...no cheapo parts. Start your truck at night and open the hood. Look for little lighting bolts showing you where spark plug wires are shorting to ground. You might even find your ignition coil is throwing little lightning bolts to a piece of metal. If so, replace the parts shorting out.

Wow, I've never heard of that problem with the crankshaft sensor...I will look into that. Thanks

In order to get a code, would the check engine light have to be on? Right now it's not....

For the record:

I went ahead and replaced the fuel pump and inlet strainer. It was a big job but the vehicle now starts right up. The fuel pressure at the manifold isn't any higher and the pressure bleeds off even more quickly....but it starts right up and runs great. It's a mystery as to why, but it's fixed.
