Exclamation 5 speed doesn't sound healthy

I probably need to rebuild my tranny but from my own experience with other stick-shift cars I know that a manual tranny can get tortured continuously before it gives up. Heck I had a '97 maxima with not a drop of clutch fluid (leaked out every time) and I ripped through gears for quite a while before I sold it. The thing that scared me a little is that the sound the maxima made with no clutch fluid is the same sound I hear from the Blazer, but much much lighter. It is a whirring noise when engaged in any gear. It is especially audible in a tunnel. The more RPMs the faster the whirring sound. Out of gear the engine sounds clean as a whistle so it has to be the tranny.... I will rebuild but I am waiting for the clutch to go out first, to do both in one shot. Plus thats a big-ticket item and I would like to put it off as long as possible. Anyone know what part that whirring noise is coming from?
