700r4 swap options?
i want to buy a 85 s10 4x4 w.2.8v6,the only problem is the 700r4 is hooped.po says the input shaft is nfg and keeps breaking the flexplate.as of now theres a thumping noise when running.has a brand new crate engine,10.000 k's.up here these yrs,82-85 trans are rare.can i use a newer version,85-91 2wd and install the transfercase?or is it a different size output shaft?
thanx

I would recommend you find a newer transmission as there were many fixes that were done. The 89+ are the best.
As far as using a 2wd trans in a 4wd application, the output shaft is much shorter in the 4wd model. To swap output shafts, you need to basically gut the transmission...
So try to find a 89+ 700R4/4L60 (not 4L60E) transmission from a 4wd truck (includes fullsize trucks) and you should be good to go!

Whoops, missed the fact that you have a 2.8L. Given that, the bell housings are different and your options will be quite limited. If you can find one from a newer s-10 with the 2.8L, you'll have a better transmission.
However, you may have to get an earlier transmission anyway unless you were to go through the work of replacing the plugs in the valve body because the '89+ transmissions would not have a manually controlled TCC lockup. Pg 95 of the ASTG 87-93 700R4 (4L60) manual details this.

You would need to remove the two aluminum plugs and swap in the stuff from your current valve body. I don't know if you could just use your current valve body.
You may want to invest in the ATSG manuals for the early and late model 700R4's.
Here is the page detailing the ECM vs oil pressure control of the TCC.
