Default Buying a used tranny

Hi everyone thanks for all the previous help. But now I got a few bucks to buy a used tranny (700/r4) from the junk yard, I would like to know if there is any thing you can do to make sure your not getting a bum tranny. Like asking certain questions or see if it shifts gears some how while it's still out and on the ground? please let me know thanks

1989 was the last year of 700R4 then GM switched to 4L60 in 1991 both units used identical housings in 2wd.So both are indentical.
4wd drive units were different and used different Tcases if memory serves me correctly.

Yes is should work, and by the way 700R4 and 4l60 are one and the same.
