Are you running either your a/c or defroster?

you need to verify the noise is indeed coming from teh ac compressor. Put a screwdriver on it, and put your ear to the handle. If its making noise you will hear it, if that ain't the source you will know that too.

If it is your ac compressor, short of replacing it there really isn't much else you can do. this repair will cost $500-$1000. Almost as much as a tranny, unless you can do the work yourself. the most important thing is evacuating the freon, then recharging the new unit.

My Blazer does the same thing. I was also thinking it was coming from the A/C Compressor area. Could this just be the A/C clutch and pulley assembly ?

As Hanr3 has suggested, put a screwdriver on the compressor and your ear on the handle of the screwdriver ( it works like a stethescope), listen for the noise and see if it's there when the compressor clutch is engaged , disengaged or all the time.
If it's there all the time, remove the belt and turn the pulleys by hand and see if you can feel the problem.
It's possible that it's the bearing in the compressor.
