Post Fuel Gauge Problems

I have 2000 chevy blazer with fuel gauge problems. I am already going to replace the fuel pump next month as soon as I get some cash. My fuel gauge has a habit of always reading full and occasionally empty at stops or even on some steady drives. My fuel pump has 153,000 miles on it and I'm replacing it as preventive maintence. I know the most common cause for this problem is the sending unit, but could it be the wiring between the sending unit and the instrument cluster? Anyone with late model 2nd gen sending unit wiring problems?

BTW, I will be testing for wiring issues anyway while I'm doing the work around the fuel tank; I just want to know if anyone has had wiring issues.
