Default Hard time shifting

I have a 1988 blazer with a v6 2wd. When i put it into reverse it is just fine...then i go into drive and take off it wont shift into 2nd unless i rev it up and almost red line it.then it will get stuck in between gears for a lil bit then shift. Then when i coast it stays in gear and engine breaks itself because it wont shift up. I got the truck from a girl that said when it happen her dad would go under the hood and get something unstuck. She said her dad said something would get stuck and cause that to happen. I am a mechanic myself and have no idea what that would be. This is my first chevy so im trying to figure out how this truck is set up. thanks!

Sounds a heck of a lot more like a tranny problem than an engine problem, and I think this girl took you for a ride.

well the only thing i can think of is the kickdown cable is stretched. the girl is my brothers freind and wouldnt be the type to screw me over. Its the second transmission in the truck. only about 50k on it. Do the 88s have a solenoid in the trans??

my '89 4x4 has the same problem, but sometimes it will shift just fine. i came to the conclusion that when i had my truck taken in to have the transmission filter replaced, they didn't tighten the bolts to the pan!! so of course now i have a pretty good fluid leak, which probably caused the rough shifting. my only thought and hope is that maybe the fluid, filter, and gasket needs replaced again. any tips on draining the fluid from the torque converter? oh, and how would a stretched TV cable (kick-down) cause hard up-shifting? would'nt it just cause the tranny to not downshift on time?
