I'm replacing cat on 98 LS 4WD 4.3L V6...
with a Walker bolt-on replacement. I have to unbolt from the exhaust manifold, and the muffler. Then I'm not sure if I should unbolt the hangers on both sides, or if there is some trick to slide it out. Also, does the cat just slide out or do I have to remove the muffler too? Thanks for any help.

I finished the job. The converter should just slide out, but it hangs up on the hangers. I had to bend the left-side hanger to get it out, and to put the new one in. The angles on the inlet and outlet flanges were also not exactly the same as the OE converter, (this was an "exact fit" replacement) so I had some forcible reassembly.

Glad you got it done. I must have missed this post before. But yeah, the hangers can be a pain to deal with and as you have found out, this can be done without removing much anything else.
