Default Manual transfer case engages itself-Any Ideas?

Every time I stop quickly (1987 K5 Blazer) I get a grinding/whining noise coming from the transmission, and no movement, it can't get into gear. I have to turn the motor off, move the lever to 4Lo, put it in park, start the motor(no more grinding), shift to neutral then back to 2WD. Not fun to do in the city. Motor mounts and tranny mounts look good.

Your transfer case is dropping into neutral. Which transfer case do you have? Look at the tag on the back of the transfer case.

You could try to adjust the linkage, but if the truck has high mileage, the pads on the shift fork inside could be worn to the point of needing replacement. I have seen a few where the pads were worn completely away and the fork was starting to wear. This required a complete replacement of the fork.

Drivetrain.com has an NP208 page that has an exploded view. They also carry the mode and range forks. I believe that the range fork is what controls the neutral shift, but you will have to open it up to see which ones are bad. Hopefully you only need the pad kit if it needs to go that far.

Default Same Boat

Hey guys

My '83 is doing the same thing, I've also never rebuilt a transfer case before. I ordered a rebuild kit, and both forks (I just figured I'll replace 'em all while I'm in there), once they get here I"ll start tearing into it. Got any tips?

Josh
