Default Shifter issues

I changed my tranny fluid and after I got back in the rig the column shifter now works like crap. When shifting from park to drive everything feels weird. I can't shift all the way to D1 anymore and when shifting back to park the key won't come out. If I force the shifter past park then it will. I did remove the clip on the shifter cable bracket and put it back in. It seems like the cable is not working correctly. If someone has any ideas it might save me from taking it into a shop for (most likely) costly repairs I'd appreciate it.

Does the cable retaining bracket bolt to the transmission pan bolts ? If so did you bolt it back up in the same spot or even over look attaching it ?

I believe after much searching that my issue is the shift cable is out of adjustment, and I think it happened because I detached the cable from the bracket before disconnecting the end loop from the tranny arm. Now I just have to figure out how to adjust the darn thing.

Update:
After adjusting the cable I still couldn't get it to work right so I took it into a tranny shop. The guy told me the lever on the tranny that the cable hooks to was installed backwards (had to have been when I had the tranny replaced years ago) and the cable is bad. He didn't want to try to fix it as the seat has to be pulled. I took it to the local Chevy dealership and they'll replace it for $280 + tax.
