Default Tranny Leaking from the Front

Hey Fellas,

Its been awhile since I been on. Havent had any issues that I need your guys knowledge, but now I do.

On my way in to work, I noticed a large plume of smoke following behind me for about an mile or so and went away. I noticed it not long after I pulled away from a light. It was 4am so I couldnt really tell what color it was at the time. The truck was running fine, no hick ups, no rough driving , everything seem fine. So I continued on to work. Once I got to work I checked under the truck and didnt see anything on on the ground, grabbed the flashlight and checked the underbody and it was coated with a oily fluid from the engine all the way back to the Diff. Couldnt tell what it was.

I asked a co-worker of mine(diesel mech) to look at it and he says it was tranny fluid and since it coming from the front of the tranny, he thinks it could be the Torgue Convertor seal went bad. He said the tranny would have to be dropped, along with the everything else that went with doing that job, ie the driveshaft, transfer case, exhaust Y-pipe, etc.

I called a transmission shop I used once before for another car and the guy there said it could be a host of other things and they wont know until they drop it. He said $350.00 to drop and re-install, and whatever the part is on top of that.

So what other things could it be and how expense could this get? I havent done anything yet. Could it be as cheap as a couple dollar seal or as bad as new torque convertor?

let me know guys.

sorry for the long post, i try and give as much info as possible.

Thanks
Ryan

There is a bushing in behind the seal that can walk out and push on the seal. If that has happened, the pump should be pulled to install a new bushing.

The parts usually aren't that bad in price.

If there is wear on the torque converter snout, then they may get you for a new converter.

It could also be a problem with the torque converter itself, but that is pretty rare.

I agree. Pretty much been my experience that when this comes on all of a sudden, your worst hit is the torque converter. But there's a ton of them.

Sounds like you have a reasonable shop there.
