Default tranny problems..

Searched a bit,and used the bit of common sense i have with these transmissions.

Friend of mine has a 97 tahoe 2wd with im pretty sure the 4l60e. i think its got around 150k since last time i put in a fuel pump for her. She called me this morning saying when shes sitting still and goes to accelerate the engine revs to about 4 k and barely moves. I asked her if her hubby can check the fluid levels and she said her father in law checked it and it was low and they topped it off a while back. Reason they checked the fluid the 1st time is she would put it in reverse and it wouldnt do nothing. She would then turn the key off and back on then it would work. That makes me wonder if it was something else.

I may head down there but its a hour drive. Id hate to go down there and tell her something thats not the issue. Would the tps cause the trans to run like that? Im familiar with the 700r4,but not so much with the electronic crap in the 4l60e. First thing im going to do is check levels and find the leak if it has one.

I have a thread titled something like "700R4/4l60e things I've learned". I have a list of common problems and things to check. I also have all the engine sensors listed and how they relate to transmission operation. I believe someone included the solenoids in the thread and On/OFF combinations for each gear.

Just guessing, I don't think it's going to be a big problem. Low fluid will usually take out 3&4 gear clutches before anything else. It's either going to be the pump or a solenoid and I would lean more towards a solenoid.

im hoping its just a solenoid as she has no money to put towards this. anyone by chance have a diagram/image of the transmission guts with each solenoid labeled so i know which one to remove etc? that'd be awesome sauce.

also...i gotta find that thread.

edit : probably my stupid question of the year but if there was a transmission trouble code, can you pull it with a regular scanner in the engine port? would the service light be on? Ive been told some cars you have to take to a tranny specialist and have them pull any codes. Ive never had to troubleshoot with a 4l60e,just old 700r4s etc.

Hunt for one that offers free test drives.

Yea thats what i thought. I THINK aamco does it. Not sure i thought i remembered seeing a sign or something. This sucks! Im going out to her house tomorrow morning to test drive it. I HOPE its a engine bogging issue and not a tranny issue. engine bogging is easier to fix the a darn trans.

I spent 6 hours today wasting my time. Today i replaced the shift solenoids, pressure switch, and a pan change with some lucas. Same problem. Im guessing its a drum or a band.

Usualy if its not moving forward or only goes in gear and doesnt shift it can be the cylinoids or your bands and cluths forward gears are shot. This was the case with my tranny. It would go forward in 1st gear but wouldnt upshift.I found out my front pump was bad then I dudg into the drums. The 1st of bands and cluths were perfect. After digging into the 2cnd part then 3rd part of the drum everything inside was smoked. The 3rd set of bands had bni lining on them what so ever.Im going to put a basic rebuild kit in it and change the boost valve so it has better line presure and stronger shifts.
