Default HELP! Removing the gas cap (locked!)

So for the first time I looked inside my gas door... and lo-and-behold, there's a locked gas cap.

I didn't get a key for it when I bought the truck... so I need to get it off. I really don't care if I break it so I guess I can drill it out?

But I'm looking for an easier way... advice?!??!

I think the only way to do it would be to drill it out I have seen some of them though that you can just stick a screw driver in and open.

I would think drilling would put metal shavings from the lock and plastic shavings from the cap in your gas tank. But that's just me.

Yeah, I was concerned about that too... but I have to drain the gas anyway so not too worried about shavings. Actually I'll probably just get under and remove the tube from the tank first...

I'll try a screwdriver tho...

Do you think heat and possible sparks near your gas tank is a good idea?

I have done it with a screw driver and some beating and banging.

The Internet is a useful tool, search how to pick a lock. an old small allen wrench is a good torsion bar and a bobby pin is still the best rake out there. it's a lot easier than it looks and the tumbler on the gas cap lock shouldnt be complex to pick at all.

Stick the allen wrench in the top of the keyhole and put some torque on the lock as if you're turning the key. then take a straightened bobby pin (or similar small pointy device) and stick it in as far as it goes. drag it forward repeatedly on the bottom of the key hole. this acts like the ridges and valleys on the key itself and should place the tumblers in their unlocked position after a few rakes.

Hope this helps, Good luck!

Easiest way to do it is to stick a flathead screwdriver in the key slot and give it a nice whack with a hammer. Ive had to do this a couple times and it works great. It doesn't leave any dust or particles that could fall in the tank, it just breaks the lock mechanism and the cap will come off freely.
