Exclamation new starter (info needed)

Just purchased a new starter for my 84 k5 when i removed the old starter there were no shims in place and eveyrhting seemed to work fine. But with the new starter it seems to have a slight grind noise for maybe a hlaf a second before motor fires is this ok or is there a adjustment that needs to be made if so what?

thanks in advance for any and all help.

If it grinds, you should adjust it so that it doesn't grind. You can get starter shim packs that have various different thickness shims in them. Most starters come with directions and a little go/no-go gauge for checking proper adjustment. The go/no-go gauge looks like a rectangular keyway.

I think that if it whines before it starts the starter gears are too far away from the flywheel so you would want to add a shim on the outside starter bolt side to bring the gears closer together. Thats what I did on mine and it works fine now.
