Default Best Winter/Snow Tires??

'96 S-10 with 15" wheels.

I have to replace my BF Goodrich All Terrain tires (30 x 9.50). Got about 35k out of them, which is okay, I guess. I'm thinking about replacing them with new ones. But it'll cost about $650.

If there's a better tire for SNOW, though, then I'll want to look into buying those. Even though these BFG/ATs get great reviews, I don't personally think they perform all that well in snow.

Anybody have any experience with another brand of tires that might perform better in snow and which are as durable and maybe even cheaper?

I'm originally from sunny California so I don't have a lot of experience with snow except for the few years I've been here in Colorado.

You might want to look at Goodyear Duratracs, though you'll have to step down to 235's or up to 31's. They don't make them in 30's unless they started recently. One of the better on/offroad tires and they are rated with the magical snowflake for snow.

X2 on the Duratracs. I have them and i cannot be stopped in the snow, they are amazing to say the least. And they really dont have any road noise at all for an aggressive tire. Oh and also supposedly another member on here got over 80k miles on them and was still within legal tread.

Thanks for the comments. The Duratracs also currently are offering a $60 rebate for a set of four also, which makes them about the same price as the BFGs, so it's tempting.

I have read some reviews though that ding these tires for road noise. In fact, some people rail against them for that. That conflicts with the comment above by cherrylblazer, though. So I guess I'll have to read more reviews. I'll get 'em if road noise isn't an issue. I'll check our tirerack. Thanks.
