Transmission controls/electronics are the same. The only thing that is different between a '96-'97 to a '98+ is that there are 4 O2 sensors. In mid-'02, the injection system changed from the SCFI to the MFI setup (which is backwards compatible). The EGR system also changed as well as a few other misc sensors. But everything engine wise from '96-'01 will be the same.

OK:
Engine is in (not completely hooked up but in!!!) Does anyone know what to do with the knock sensor if the new motor (2001) has a different style sensor where the 1996 is different? Do I have to mount it somewhere? the 96 has a 1/4 pipe thread for the sensor and the 01 has a 5/16 threaded hole??? Had to swap oil pan,oil pickup screen, exhaust manifolds and a couple sensors, but all in all not bad.

You could try to use the new sensor, but may need to get the wiring pigtail and diagram for the new sensor as well.

ok. engine is out, new one in....runs beautiful!!! now how about some help to change heater core, from the inside or outside?

To change the heater you almost have to remove the whole dash in a 96 its apain in the butt
