My 1999 GM manual says the following (pg 0-25)
Key Identification and Usage
...
"The key identification is obtained from the four-character key code stamped on the knockout portion of the key head. Knock the plugs out of the key head after code numbers have been recorded. The code list, available to owners of key cutting equipment from equipment suppliers, determines the lock combinations from the code numbers."
Cutting Keys
After the code has been determined from the code list or the key code diagram, perform the following steps:
1. Cut a blank key to the proper level of each of the tumbler positions.
2. Inspect the key operation in the lock cylinder.
When my ignition switch for my 1982 Prelude went bad I got another from a wrecking yard. I wanted the same one key to open the doors and work in the ignition switch which required a locksmith to come to my place and re-key the replacement ignition switch.
I remember the locksmith noting that ignition switches will have special hardware that will indicate if the ignition switch has been replaced. I had that on my prelude in the form of screws with break-away heads.
A quick look in my manual shows only one way to get the ignition lock/switch out of the steering column is by having the key.
Perhaps a locksmith would know more.

Is locksmith service beneficial in replacing the ignition switch or not as per your experience?
