Yup, my remote oil filter is mounted sideways so it only gets a little oil in it before I can screw it on. I always lube the seal, it makes removal that much easier & seals better.
As for the comment about not filling the filter beforehand because it's unfiltered oil - it's new oil! How dirty could it be?

On an S10 where the filter is sort-of small, I don't think it's that important, really doesn't hurt anything either way. If you've ever worked on something larger with a filter that holds 2 quarts I would fill it.

Some vehicles I prefill the filter others I dont. Always lube the seal. One thing I do that most dont is adding most of the oil then firing up the engine for 8 seconds. After that I check and top off the oil.

on a filter that can be pre filled, I always do it. True, the oil pump is in the bottom of the oilpan, but, the valve train is way above the oil filter. So, the filter must fill up before the overhead gets any oil. In a small capacity filter it might not matter that much, but in a huge diesel engine with dual oil filters with a capacity of 6 quarts, a couple of seconds without oil pressure is never a good thing. I work for a truck shop where pre-charging the oil filter is procedure everytime an oil change is done.
