I wouldn't continue doing it. It's always a good idea to stop and shift into neutral before switching into 4hi or 4lo. That way you don't run the risk of trashing your transfer case.

erm, my manual said that I could shift into 4w hi @ "any" speed. My parent's '89 would allow the same behavior. 4w-lo was a stop and neutral shift, though (Manual says "neutral at under 3mph").

@ Calvin: what? what does have to do with 4wd on the fly?

@ yones12: it's shift-on-the-fly. i wouldn't do it at 85 MPH with my foot in the gas, BUT, you are fully able to shift into 4hi at a reasonable speed. This is the main reason i dislike anything but manual shift levers. anyway, i have gone into 4hi as fast as 35 mph. i wouldn't try any faster than that, AND i only did it out of need. if it could be helped i prefer to slow down a LOT more than that.

it's probably bad for it in the long run, but you can do it.

I have asked this question as well when wondering at what speed to shift into 4Hi. So I got out the 1996 Chevrolet Blazer Owner's Manual and had a look. And shifting from 2Hi to 4Hi I quote " Press and release 4Hi Switch. This can be done at any speed, and the front axle will lock automatically"

I wouldn't recommend doing this at high speeds. Although I have put mine in 4Hi at 45Mph a few times.

When putting my Blazer in 4Lo I always stop put it in Neutral and then shift to 4Lo. On my Sonoma which has a 5spd you have to stop put it in Neutral and push the clutch all the way to the floor before it will go into 4Lo.
