Default Replace Computer???

I was just informed by my trusted mechanic that I might have to replace the computer in my 1986 S-10 Blazer, 2.8L, 2wd. He didn't give me a cost and I was wondering if this is possibly a DIY job and about what it would cost. Also, I'm guessing there might be some "tech" issues that I don't have the tools to perform.

older computers are just plug&play. just hook them up and thats it, none of the reflashing crap you have to do now a days. not really sure where they are in the older s10s, changed one in my 90 fullsize and its right behind the glovebox, just unplug it and take of a couple screws and it comes out.

why does he think it needs to be changed?

Wouldn't pass SMOG (Calif ripoff!) back in January. Has some major work done (MAP sensor, O2 sensor, cat conv, tune-up and various gaskets). Passed smog. About a month ago the service engine soon light kept coming on and off with intervals of staying on for quite awhile. Had it scoped. Code came up that O2 sensor was bad. Checked out, OK. Reset computer. All systems "go" (timing, etc). Told me to drive it and see what happens. Running great, then service engine soon light comes back on. mechanic had mentioned that if the problem continued the computer would need to be replaced (quoted me $420). If it's a plug and ply, hey I can do that!
