alt. belt
ok i have this problem thats been occuring alot but not always. it doesnt have anything to do with how loud i play my soundsystem because even when its off it does this. when im ideling my rpm shifts around from 650-450 usually around there never more then that and then when my alt kicks in is when the rpm go back up. also when it kicks in it shakes the car a little bit not alot but enough for me to notice from what it was. the voltage meter also goes up and down with the rpm kind of synchronized and when the rpm dips low the headlights dim. anyways i know i have a loose belt because it squeeks like a mother whenever i turn on the car cold outside or not weve hit 50s up here in minnesota and its still squeeks. i havent done any alt. replacement, battey replacment or alt. belt replacement i checked the wires and they seem to be tightened and nothing is loose what do u gus think is it just the belt or is there more to the problem.
thanks,
kyle

RE: alt. belt
It the belt is too loose you may not be properly charging the battery.

Check your battey connections. AC Delcos are notorious for having the positive post corrode inside the battery, it is not visible until you remove the battery cables. Carefull I have had the whole post fall out and leak battery acid all over the place.
One other thing, is your defroster on? Your fluctuation could be due to the a/c compressor cycleing on and off.

Hey
I have a 2000 LT, and I was having the same problems. Not as major with the volts fluctuating, but definently the squealing. I replaced the alternator, and I haven't had any problems since. The bearings were shot, and it was causing a slight bit of looseness in the belt, just enough to screw everything up.
