different tranny after 97?
Same tranny GM has been using since the early '80's. 700R4. It got upgraded over the years and became the 4L60. Then it became electronically controlled and became the 4L60E. In '98 GM modified the tranny case, it now has a removeable bellhousing. In the past years the bellhousing was part of the tranny case. Now it is seperate. As for the tranny being crap. Hardly. It has had some issues over the years. But it has been in use since the early 80's, and not just in the S10's. It has also been in use in the fullsize 1/2 ton trucks, and light duty 3/4 ton trucks, including Suburbans, Tahoes, pick-ups, Astro Vans, fullsize vans, etc.
Hanr3, I think you forgot to mention that it was used in the F-bodies and Corvettes behind v8s (and v6s for the F-bodies).
Also in a little bit different configuration, but similar insides the 4T60 and 4T60E used in the FWD vehicles coupled with the 3.8L L27, L36, L67 (S1 & S2)

There was a change in '96. That change being that the 93-95 transmissions had a 1 peice case, where the 96-current had a 2 peice case consisting of the main case and a bolt on bell housing. Also, according to tciauto.com, the length of the case from bellhousing to transmission mount changed from 22-1/2" to 23-3/16". The only change to the trans is the case no the guts.
Same tranny but diffeerent amount of discs and stuff. The ones used on the four cylinder and 60 degree v6 motors is not as reliable and also doesnt have to be. They are built according to the horsepower they have to deal with and YES the insides are the same and you can easily rebuild the weaker ones with the beter clutch packs. The one for the 4.3 are, according to all reports, the same as the ones for the v8's. This would make it a nice, very reliable tranny.
From what I gather in the wind, so to speak, its old guys like me that just dont like them. Caused by a real simple problem. Its run by the computer. Most of us dont like that. I dont either. Not for me. But for joe average consumer its a true blessing. I wish they would simply give the average guy a park, reverse, and drive button. I have no idea where the rest of the stuff is needed for anymore. If its all electronic, why isnt it built into the steering column and all that lever junk done away with??? Who needs it?? Do the same thing as the cruise control buttons???
