Default Can some one please explain

Alright so I have a shortage issue somewhere in my truck. I changed out the old positive cables, the grounds all looked good maybe I could do some cleaning on them. But anyways I ran the lead cable down to the starter and connected the cable to the alternator and all was good but when I started it and went to move it some how the terminal broke and the ground to the frame was smoking a bit. Could I have a short in my starter, or is my alternator making to much of a charge? Or did I just screw up some where? Need some helpful tips or info if you got any. I literally just made this account today to see if I could get some answers
