Question Dash mounted sensors

I have a 2001 Trailblazer which is I think the first year for the Trailblazer, though it is still the old body style. Anyway I've been reading some of the posts regarding ahl and drl's and if I understand them correctly, the sensor in the passenger dash speaker is for the automatic headlights? My car has another similar sensor in the middle of the defroster grille on the dash. Can anyone tell me what this sensor is for? I need to replace the defroster grille due to age breakage and can't find a replacement with a hole for this sensor. Can I live without this middle of the dash sensor? Or do I have to bypass it somehow?
Thanks!!!

The sensor in the middle of the dash is the sun load sensor for the automatic climate control. Without it, you may not get the proper performance from you HVAC system when using automatic mode.

I suppose I could just not use the "automatic" climate control and adjust it manually and not worry about the sensor.
Thanks so much for your help! Appreciate it!
