Default Fuel Gauge Help

While drive down the road that was about as rough as a country road I saw my fuel gauge drop to past "E" and just sits there with the fuel light on. The pump/sending unit where replaced prior to me purchasing the vehicle. So could the new sending unit be bad already? What can I check with out taking it to a shop?

Any ideas what to check would be great!
