Sorry for resurecting an older thread... but I was reading here and in a few threads I found in my searches and it was mentioned that in some cases doing this puts too high of a load on the stock harness and can actually melt the wires.

I'm running low beam HID's though which use less wattage, would this be enough of a compensation to make this mod safe?

If you were to use a relay kit on the HID, it won't put any additional load on the system.

Alright... having no experience with this could you explain what exactly the relay kit is and how it's hooked up? I understand that the relay is in essence a switch, which is triggered by a current running to it.

You can buy a plug-n-play kit from a number of HID vendors that will supply full battery power to the HID ballast.
