Default Slow Starter

With Good Battery, starter turns slow. Thinking it was bad, I removed it. It tests good when I do a bench test on it. What areas can I check voltage from engine bay down to starter. I will check power, first at the end of starter wires.

There are a few possibilities for a sluggish starter, lets get you fixed up

1) The starter itself. You took it out and tested it which is good, we know it can spin at speed but you probably did not present the engine load to the starter under test. That said, lets assume that the starter is good for now

2) Battery capacity under the 100 amp(ish) load of the starter. With the starter back in place, test the battery voltage at rest and then measure it during cranking to see how much it drops

3) Excessive loss in the cables. The higher the load the more critical it is to have clean tight connections with no corrosion and no frayed cables. At 100 amps or so, any imperfection in the power down to the starter can result in unacceptable voltage drop. While cranking the starter measure the voltage right at the cable attachment bolt (center) at the starter and compare that reading to # 2. Do the same thing while cranking measuring voltage between starter ground and battery ground.

Report back and we will discuss the results. These may help you as you:
