Question Starter relay ground

Hello everyone, I have searched through the forums on this site and cant seem to find my answer so I figured I would make a post. If I do it incorrectly please forgive me for my ignorance, this is not something I do often. I have a 1998 Chevy Blazer that I picked up for a project. The gentlemen who owned it before me took the motor out for a 86 Tacoma build he was doing. He cut things out and kind of made a mess of it, so I have been slowly putting it back together. I'm close to the finish line but ran into a problem I cant shake. I have some sort of ground issue on my starter relay, and I was hoping to get some advice. I have included the schematic I was using to try and find my problem, the 2 black/350 ground wire coming out my starter relay that is supposed to ground. It runs to my AC compressor plug (on the car) and has a clip on diode attached. There was a cut just before the diode, I joined the two back together to see if I could get the starter to engage and nothing happened. I pulled them apart and just touched the ground to the block and the starter would turn. I figured my problem was the ac compressor connector/diode. I replaced them both and still have the same problem. So I'm wondering if the wire is supposed to be grounded before going to the diode. Or maybe there something else I should have done and didn't do. Any help or tips would be very much appreciated

There are 5 wires in/out of the starter relay:
  1. Black (coil ground)
  2. Purple (to starter)
  3. Red (power from maxifuse)
  4. purple/white (2 from trans switch and to IPC)
The black relay ground wire simply goes to a good frame/battery ground anywhere on the vehicle

So the black ground off the relay doesn't tie into the ac compressor plug at all?

No the AC circuit is not involved in the starter circuit.
