Jaxxon hit my point. It's the engine that's the issue. The rest of the vehicle is immaterial to the fuel efficiency. They are disabling the engine with that corrosive chemical. The body and electricals are still useful. Why not remove the engine so the rest of the body can be recycled/reused? Think of all the tires that could be reused alone.
Personally, even though my Jimmy qualifies I wouldn't use the program. Why would I start making payments when I already own my truck outright? And why did they put the limit of cars no older than 84 year model? There aren't many but all those 70's boxes would be the best culprits.

I would take advantage of the cash for Klunkers program except for a few things.
1) I think the program is just another way for the Obama administration to bail out the auto makers
2) The dealer will NEVER lose money on ANY car deal
3) my 1989 S-10 Balzeris a classic
4) My 1989 S-10 Blazser has more power than a Trail Blazer
5) I can take my 1989 S-10 Blazer througheth mud and woods without breaking it ( lets see a stock Trail Blazer do that)
6) I LOVE my 1989 S-10 Blazer
7) I feel my 1989 S-10 Blazer is BETTER than a new car ( rear end me and find out why)
8) even though my 1989 S-10 Blazer is 20 years old it doesn't qualify for teh Obama car bail out cause it gets 18 mpg in teh city, they require a COMBINED city and highway milage less than 17.
Which tells me that I'll be passing my 1989 S-10 Blazer down to Blazersfor life when he gets his license

I love my 89 S15 Jimmy, it is 2wd but I do not go off road. I get 20 to 21 MPG every day. I waiting for it to get to 25 years old so I can get Antique plates in MS. Antique plates I think are $25.00 and do not expire. There is no way I would let it get crushed or destoyed. Even if it gets wrecked I would rather see it end up in a junk yard for parts.

About the Cash for Clunkers deal. The government is paying the "rebate" with our tax dollars. The dealerships are not losing money.

I suppose in a fiberglass car, and a light right foot you might get 20mpg...which is hardly a lofty MPG goal in 2009.
The notion that any car with a 350 is fuel efficient is rather absurd. The ones I've owned or driven (all fuel injected) ranged between 12 and 17. My dad's Corvette gets great mileage if you drive it really gently...of course it weighs next to nothing, and is very aerodynamic. Drive it like it's intended though, and the mileage plummets.

A friend of mine works at the local dodge dealership and its his job is to kill all the cars that come in under this program. He cant believe the amount of nice low mileage cars that he has to destroy. He told me that the cars dont have to be crushed. They can sell everything but the drivetrain, which has to be distroyed before they can sell anything off of it. He said they have contracts with local yards that buy these cars. So not all is waisted.

What happens to the vehicle I trade in?
The CARS Act requires that the trade-in vehicle be crushed or shredded so that it will not be resold for use in the United States or elsewhere as an automobile. The entity crushing or shredding the vehicles in this manner will be allowed to sell some parts of the vehicle prior to crushing or shredding it, but these parts cannot include the engine or the drive train.

4) Huh? Depending on which engine is in the TrailBlazer, it has 100-200 more hp than your Blazer does.
