Default quick question about ky gun laws

ok me and my buddys all live in a semi rural part of town on the ohio river, and we love to take our shotguns and shoot clays, question is though, is there any restrictions against any of us (17 years old) having a unloaded shotgun in a case behind our seat?

I AM NOT A LAWYER, but I found this: http://www.lcav.org/states/kentucky....urchasePossess

It doesn't say anything specific about persons under the age of 18 transporting a shotgun. From how you described your activities and intentions, the law would allow you to do so with a handgun and generally, states are far more lenient on long guns (shotguns/rifles) than handguns. If the state law allows you to transport/use a handgun in your situation, it should certainly allow you to do the same with a shotgun.

From the link above:
Kentucky provides no minimum age for the possession of rifles or shotguns, although federal age restrictions still apply.

Kentucky prohibits a person under the age of 18 from
possessing, manufacturing or transporting a handgun, unless he or she is:
  • In attendance at a hunter's safety course or a firearms safety course;
  • Practicing in the use of a firearm or target shooting at an established firing range, or any other place where the discharge of firearms is not prohibited;
  • Engaging in an organized competition involving the use of a firearm, or participating in or practicing for a performance by a non-profit group that uses firearms as a part of the performance;
  • Hunting or trapping pursuant to a valid license issued pursuant to Kentucky statutes or administrative regulations;
  • Traveling to or from any activity described above with an unloaded handgun;
  • On real property which is under the control of an adult and has the permission of that adult and his or her parent or legal guardian to possess a handgun; or
  • At his or her residence and in the possession of a handgun with the permission of his or her parent or legal guardian and justified in using physical or deadly physical force.
The federal age restrictions link says
Federal law provides no age limitations with respect to the sale of a long gun or long gun ammunition by an unlicensed person.

Federal law provides no minimum age for the possession of long guns or long gun ammunition.
I think you should be alright especially if the shotguns are unloaded. Some states require the ammo to be in a separate compartment as the gun (like ammo in glovebox, gun in trunk) but with an SUV, it's really not possible. If you keep the guns as far back and out of reach as possible, I think you should be alright.

Here are some more links to the actual KY and Federal Statutes.

which is a perfect reason why questions like this is why we should always ask the local PD. since it's their job to enforce the law, they would best know what the local & State laws would be.

or so you'd think.

that's what out gun laws in Ontario state as well.

so long as the ammo is not stored in the same case/location as the weapon, and the weapon is not within easy arms reach-and readily visable-then you're safe for transporting it (them).

while i haven't had my FAC in a while, i remember something about letting the local PD know you were transporting a weapon to the range or club, and the route you were taking.

but don't remember if that was resticted to hand guns only, or even long guns.

to cover your own ***, i'd triple check anything you read or are told with your local PD, sinc ethey'll be the ones who will decide just what laws you & your friends have broken.

be sure to let us know what you find out.

I can't believe I forgot to mention that. Absolutely, check with your local police department. Even if, according to the law, you're acting within your rights, it doesn't stop a mistaken officer from thinking that your activities are illegal. There are WAY too many laws and even police officers can get confused from time to time.

How times have changed!

When I was in highschool, my brother, friends and I roamed the country side with shotguns and/or rifles without a care in the world when it came to the law. During deer season, it wasn't even noticed if you went to school with a rifle in the rack of the back window of your truck.
