Default V8 question

This may sound a bit strange, first off. I found an old Caprice Estate I would like to have, turn it into a bit of a project. The body and interior are in very good condition and it supposedly has around 100k. The problem is the old 307 is seized. I was wondering of anyone might have some insight on what would be needed/how hard it would be to pull it out and put a fuel injected Vortec 5.7L V8 in its place. Or maybe a carb'd one, I've read of carbureted Vortecs before. I thought it would be a good tow rig. Thanks, any help is appreciated!

You would def need all of the wiring, it can be done though. Also, you may want an LT1 or LS1 because the truck engines are taller and you could end up with clearance issues.

Unless you want the cowl hood look...

I've always been indifferent on cowl hoods (the tasteful ones anyway) but one on this wagon would look a bit strange because it's white with woodgrain. Would i be able to cannibalize all the needed wiring from the donor and just rerun it all?

I'm not sure on the transmission choices, I think it has the 700R4 which became the 4L60E? So it should have the same bolt pattern for a newer 350? Don't know about how it would work on a larger older carbureted engine

built a carbd ghetto vortec with my friend, we just re drilled the holes in the intake manifold to the vortec angle, worked awesome. The headers got mounted upside down and backwards with glass packs straight up in the air. Its a mud truck.

you can either strip a donor car for the wiring harness, or you can purchase a Painless wiring harness. and the Painless kit can be ordered to your exact needs.

as for the trans........it all depends on which way you wanna go, carb'd or FI'd.

but you'll definately want an OD trans.

GL with your project, and be sure to start a build thread on it when you get it going.

if you're going to fuel injection i'm sure along with the wiring harness you'll need a new computer too?

either trans will work.

if you want an LS1, a 5.3L or 6.0L out of a truck will work, you will just need an accessory assembly off of a camaro/firebird/corvette. and an LS1/LS6 intake with the appropriate throttle body + MAF sensor

Just rebuild the 307, those were great motors.

And an LS1 is NOT a 5.3 or 6.0. An LS1 was only available in Corvettes, Camaros and Firebirds/Trans Ams. It is a 5.7/346 ci.

The truck engines are LSx's BASED off the LS1.

i know i was saying to go for the other two, 5.3Ls are a dime a dozen and can be made to have some decent power.

Yeah I'd really like a fuel injected Vortec 5.7 if I could find one, I think they'd be cheaper to get than a 5.3 but would have more power. I found out I would need a new transmission because the one in it is an oddball just for an Olds engine. I'm not a mechanic by any stretch of the imagination, but I'll have a lot of free time once I'm out of school and it's something I would like to attempt. Whether it's a disaster waiting to happen, you tell me . I'm trying to rearrange some bills and find something to pull it back with.
