I wouldn't think so. It all depends on the set up such as engtine, tcase, rear end and tires.

i would tend to agree with that, simply because of the simplicity of the older ones. i have beat my 89 to death for well over a year now. in that time i also had a 97, the 97 had fuel pump go, intake manifold got messed up with water, the fuel tank sprung a leak(party the fault of its positioning) the rear diff broke, nothing but problems!! some of them were routine expected problems but on the other hand my 89 will keep running in 34" of water. also replacement parts!!! 89 fuel pump--- 150 97 pump--600, cat converter 77$- 280. keep it simple!!

No, the older versions are NOT better than the newer versions.
First off, the difference between the older and newer is age of parts, body style, engine and tranny. Same frame, same axles, same suspension, etc. The 2putt8 is a dog, although it was considered a powerhorse in its day. The 4.3L V6 has more power than an old 350 V8 from the 70's.


As for improvements, I dont recommend cranking the t-bars, it puts tons of undue stress on teh rest of the steering/suspension parts leading to earlier failure, especially half shafts.

The best first mod is a rear locker, 30" off-road tires, tow points front and back, skid plates, and practice driving. Wheel that for a while and you'll learn where you need to spend your money.

Once you master 30" tires, then worry about going bigger. You'll be surprised where 30" tires and a skilled driver can go.
