Default 4 wheel drive????????

ok so when im in 4 wheel drive,hi or lo....on hard dirt everything is fine....as soon as i hit soft sand and my back right tire starts to spin, all the other tires transfer power to that tire and then my (4x4) is useless because only one tire is spinning....and it happens to be the tire that has no traction....is something wrong or is this how the blazer is built? do i need a spool/locker/limited slip...??????

p.s. its a 98 blazer 4x4 A/T

If you aren't getting a tire to spin up front, then your 4wd is not fully engaged. Most common fault is the front axle engagement...

A properly engaged 4wd system (4hi, 2hi, N, & 4lo - ie. no Auto) should lock the front and rear driveshafts together. This is why you don't want to drive on dry, high traction surfaces in 4wd. 2 wheels (one front, one rear) should always be turning at the same rate when in 4wd mode.

Check your vacuum actuator to see if it engaging the front axle.

If you do find out that its the front actuator what you can actually get to be more reliable is a cable engagement system. Ive seen a few of the out there and they allow you to manually engage the front axle by pulling a cable. Neat thing is that it allows ya get to get a 2-lo gear if you leave the front end dis-engaged. Im considdering getting one myself as my xfer case is having similar issues (though i think i haveissues with the 4x4gearselection solenoid too)
