So I decided, after pricing new windows, to attempt to fix my fading, crusted, ugly window trim. Some of the craters felt like 80 grit sandpaper themselves. I knew this was not going to be fun. I started by taping off everything really good.

And you can see my test area to the right with the flat black.

I gave it a real good alcohal rub and began to sand. Didn't take too long before I figured out to remove all the rough spots I would be altering the shape from the surrounding good spots. So I stopped. I sanded everything the same, not removing the rough spots completly. I instead gave it a few more coats of primer, and a couple sandings inbetween.

I then sprayed it with some Black Gloss spray paint that was intended for plastic. This stuff was great. Great coverage, but a bit heavy. As it ran on one side. Takes some time to set up too. So no pics of it yet due to the wet sanding needed to be done, the runs on one side and some trash on the other. I will be wet sanding tomorrow and laying down the final coat. I'll get some more pics.

looks good man. what grit sandpaper did you use and what products did you use for the primer and paint? ill be doing this same thing in a few weeks and i think ill be able to get by with just a scuff pad since my trim is just faded and not pitted, but ill be going with body color paint intead of black.

Sometimes, you have to make due with what you have. I had a few cans some wally world primer laying around. I would highly recommend a more friendly primer, one more sandpaper friendly. Getting you pads clogged fast just sucks. If your not blistering and just fading, red scotch brite is all you should need. Myself, I started with 220 grit and a hand sander. Got most of the bad spots down and hand sanded the rest by hand. A sandable primer will make things move faster. I will be wet sanding the Valspar Gloss Back paint I got at lowes. Like the ****ty primer I delt with, I decided not to use the cheap wally world paint. And actually, I just went out and looked at everything and could even see me spraying it flat black, lol. I will be wetsanding with 1500 grit to remove the runs and trash. Going to let it sit one more day before I start anymore. Here is how it sits.

Sorry about moving pics, but had my truck listed for sale on another site and if you clicked on the pics it would bring you the intire album. I take pictures of everythin but when I sell something, some things are better left to the imagination, ya-know. Sorry

Do you still have the pictures? If so, you can make them open up only to the full resolution image rather than the album they are in. The Image Posting FAQ in the Forum Help & Suggestion Center (all the way at the bottom) explains further.
Without the pictures, this post's usefulness is greatly diminished.
